Tourmaline is known as one of the most diverse gemstones being found in all colours. Many tourmaline colours have their own special names. Some named by their origin: Paraiba from Brazil – intense blue, or violet- or greenish blue; Rubellite – a reddish tourmaline; watermelon tourmaline – green on the outside, pink on the inside.
Named after the Sinhalese term turmali, the name given to all coloured crystals on the island of Sri Lanka at the time, some believe tourmaline to be helpful to creative people such as artists, authors and actors.
In Africa, tourmaline was once used to awaken someone from “the dream of illusion.” Ancient ceremonies in India included the use of Tourmaline to bring insight and help in the discovery of that which is good.
Commonly found in Afghanistan, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Tanzania and the United States. Tourmaline is known as Earths most colourful mineral it’s no wonder Tourmaline is often used by jewellers.
Paraiba Tourmaline is the most valuable having trace elements of copper that produce a beautiful bright blue to bright green colour that is highly sought after. Found in the late 1980’s specimens quickly found a price range in excess of $10,000 a carat for high quality faceted examples. Described as Electric or Neon they are the most sort after of all Tourmalines.
