The sparkling blue sapphire is enhanced with the shimmering white diamonds all set in 18K gold. All this hangs from a 40cm 18K gold chain to wear high on the neck. A stunning piece for those wanting to show off just a little.

Sapphires are well-known for their beautiful blue colours although they also come in other colours. However, the deep blue colour it is mostly known for also gave it its name. It is named after the Latin saphirus and the Greek sapheiros, both meaning blue. Sapphires belong to the corundum family, as do rubies.
However, the blue colour is caused by iron and titanium within the stone, while ruby red is caused by chromium. At 733 carats, the Black Star of Queensland was, for a long time, the largest Sapphire in the world. It was replaced by the 1404.5 carat Star of Adam.
Sapphires have been enjoyed since 800BC. Rulers of ancient Persia believed that the sky was blue because it reflected the blue colour of sapphires. Sapphires were worn by kings as a charm to ward off harm, and others believed it would protect against witchcraft.
An Italian superstition holds that sapphire amulets help with eye problems and melancholy. Some believe that the sapphire is a symbol of the heavens, a guardian of innocence, a bestower of truth, a promoter of good health, and a preserver of chastity.
Sapphires are the birthstone for the month of September and the traditional stone for the 45th wedding anniversary. They are also the Zodiac Gemstone for Taurus.
