Topaz was first discovered in 1768 in Portugal and has been extensively used in jewellery and gem carving since then. In 1947, the process of irradiation started bringing more blue topaz stones to market. The favourites of these are the Swiss Blue and London Blue varieties closely followed by the Sky-blue variety.
While there are some concerns around process of Radiation the NRC does ensure such stones are safe considering watching TV is 33 times more radiation.
